Smile Safety in Sports

Physical activity and exercise are crucial for overall well-being but don’t forget to protect your teeth while active. According to the ADA, approximately 39% of dental injuries are sports-related. If you’re playing a sport this summer make sure to protect your smile with a mouthguard.

Mouthguards cushion your mouth, teeth and gums during sport activities and prevent possible chips or tooth breakage. There are three types of mouthguards available for use:

  • Stock – Ready to wear, stock mouthguards are available for purchase at most sporting goods stores. Although inexpensive these mouthguards can be bulky and may not protect your teeth as effectively as other mouthguard options.
  • Mouth-Formed – Also known as ‘Boil & Bite’, these mouthguards offer more coverage than stock mouthguards and are found at most sporting goods stores. Mouth-formed mouthguards form to the teeth to enhance protection by placing them in boiling water to soften the mold and then inserting them in your mouth.
  • Custom-Made – Individually designed for you, these mouthguards form perfectly to your teeth and offer the most comfort and protection of the three. Custom-made mouthguards can only be made through your dental provider’s office and require an impression to be taken.

If you’re signed up for a summer league or enjoy a pick-up basketball game, invest in a mouthguard. Your smile is a huge part of you so don’t risk a potential injury while enjoying outdoor sports in the warm summer weather!
